Nintendo DS Mods - Modifications of the NDS console and Software. Hacks and Mod Chips (DSi Flash Cards - R4DS carts). Backup devices - SD flash cards. Scene news, latest mod reviews and all in all your one stop NDS mods place...

What is PassMe? - PassMe is a device designed by Natrium42 based off of the first DS passthrough made by DarkFader using an FPGA dev kit. It redirects the DS to a GBA Flash cart, so you can run your own program on the Nintendo DS. It requires the use of a commercial DS cart (for authentication) and a GBA Flash cart (To hold your DS program) to work.

What do you do with it? - Well, if you are a programmer, it gives you the ability to test your programs on the DS hardware, not just in an emulator. If your not a programmer, it allows you to download demo's from the internet and play them on your DS. PassMe DOES NOT work with Commercial NDS rom backup dumps!

Do I have to destroy my Metroid Prime Demo? - NO! The PassMes sold by me (PassMe PCI Complete) are sold with PCI pins soldered onto the PassMe so that your DS cart will slide into it like a slot. PassMes sold by Natrium42 use a cut down GBA cart connector. NEITHER require you to do more then insert a DS cart into the PassMe and insert the PassMe into your DS. NO soldering or programming of the CPLD required.

Will PassMe Work with my Flash Cart? - PassMe is still to new to know if it will work with every Flash Cart available. But, we are working on a list, so check compatible NDS Flash Card here.

How do I build one? - PassMe information is public knowledge. Everything you need to know to build your own PassMe is availabe (or will be) on this site under Documentation.

What is WiFiMe? - WiFiMe is an application that allows you to run homebrew code from a GBA Flash cart using a specific wireless card and special drivers. It does the exact same thing PassMe does using the "DS Download Play" feature.

What is FlashMe? - FlashMe is a firmware patch for your DS that allows you to run homebrew code from a GBA Flash cart without any additional hardware at all. But, you need a PassMe or WiFiMe to flash it the first time. After that, you are all set.

What is it? Currently it is a firmware patch that allow you to start from GBA cartridge without requiring a PassMe in the DS slot.

But...

- You need to have PassMe or WiFiMe already running to get it. You must enter a unique firmware ID to download the patch - an ID you can get by running unauthorized code from the GBA cart.

- Great installation instructions available from Lynx

I'm doing mine today and will let you know how it has worked out...

Update: It isn't tough to do, or dangerous, or even lengthy. I recommend FlashMe whole-heartedly. The Lynx tutorial will serve you well...the only stumbling block I had as a newcomer was some difficulty successfully "shorting" the neccesary connection. I realize that I'm addressing an audience of newcomers who either built or purchased a passthrough...so perhaps I'm alone in my ignorance.

Lynx's video never quite turns the DS all the way round so you can see how he shorted the connection that permits you to replace the firmware - but the updater itself is very responsive. I tried a screwdriver, flatscrew, and jumper wires without success. I eventually was able to fidget together a sufficient short by using a bent paperclip arched between the red/white square and the exterior screw nearest the L shoulder button.

First reboot - worked like a charm. I'm doing Theo's when he gets his writable GBA cart.

Where do I get one? - Well, you can either build one yourself using the documentation on this site, or order one from here or from Natrium42.

This is more very exciting news and should not pass without great fanfare. Linux for the DS is here!

The DS Linux team has been making a lot of progress lately. Not only is a kernel booting on the DS, but the SASH shell is now running along with a few text games. ROM images and patches for DS Linux can be downloaded in Downloads Section.
